Wisconsin lands Class of 2014 dual-threat QB

First-year Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen found a dual-threat quarterback he feels can lead future productive offenses in Madison, as the Badgers received a commitment from signal-caller D.J. Gillins on Monday.

One of the better dual-threats in the Class of 2014, Gillins committed to the Badgers over other finalists Arizona and Boston College.

The 6-3, 181-pounder from Ribault High School (Jacksonville, FL) was previously committed to Texas Tech but re-opened his commitment in March. The Badgers had yet to get a pledge from a quarterback in the 2014 class, so they were in good position to secure a commitment from Gillins.

Gillins, who is the 11th commit in the Badgers' 2014 class, missed the 2012 season after tearing his ACL. But he is expected to be healthy for 2013 and should continue to display his good arm strength and touch on the football this fall. However, it remains to be seen how much his athleticism will be affected by the injury. If he shows that he is healthy, though, Gillins will fit in very well with the Badgers' spread offense.

The dual-threat QB threw 31 touchdowns and passed for 2,667 yards as a sophomore but missed all but a few minutes of his junior year with his injury. He joins offensive tackle Jaden Gault and defensive tackle Craig Evans as the top recruits in Wisconsin's 2014 class.
