Warren Sapp calls Tommie Harris a 'blind dog in a meat house'

Apparently, Warren Sapp has never appreciated the comparisons that have been made with Tommie Harris.

While injuries have taken a toll on the Chicago Bears defensive tackle, in the past there were frequent references to Harris, the three technique in Lovie Smith’s Tampa Two scheme, and Sapp, the man who defines the position after a Hall of Fame career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and later the Oakland Raiders.

Sapp isn’t having any of it and when he appeared this morning on “The Mully & Hanley Show” on WSCR-670 AM in Chicago, it was Sapp who brought up Harris and lashed out at him. You can listen to the entire interview right here.

“Watching Tommie Harris this preseason, he played like a blind dog in a meat house," Sapp said. "What I am talking about is you have to have some awareness. You know that San Diego game, it was like first-and-20 and they run a draw play and he's on the wrong side with the offset back and then another time, it's second-and-15, I'm like, 'Jeez, do you not see the back? Do you just want to run up the field?'

"You can't do that as an under tackle in that defense. He needs to set the table and have a quarterback sitting right there on the stage for Julius (Peppers) to come around the corner. He doesn't have a problem with getting up the middle. It was just the awareness of the game that really eluded it for me. From what I know about the position, it just looked bad."

Sapp was asked if he is giving up on Harris at this point. That’s when he said he’s never been behind Harris.

"I never got in his corner, that's the whole point of it," said Sapp, who played 13 seasons with the Buccaneers and Raiders. "He was never my guy. It was always he was supposed to be this and he was supposed to be that. Now he says he's healthy again so let's see.

"There has only been one of me. The thing about it is he plays the game with no awareness. If you're talking about a three-technique in that system, you can't play like that."
