Stump Mitchell in mix for possible return to St. Louis

Stump Mitchell began his professional football career 31 years ago as a running back for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Now, he’s got a chance to return to St. Louis as the running backs coach for the Rams. Mitchell interviewed for the job on Monday, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

It is the last remaining position open on Jeff Fisher’s staff and there could be another candidate or two in the mix, per the report. Mitchell currently is the head coach at Southern University-Baton Rouge. The 52-year-old played for the Cardinals for nine seasons, spending the final two as a member of the Phoenix Cardinals after the franchise relocated.

Mitchell was on Mike Holmgren’s staff in Seattle for eight seasons and also worked as an assistant for the Washington Redskins. He was a beloved player while with the Cardinals because he did a lot as an undersized back at 5-9, 188 pounds.
