Source: Falcons worked out Connecticut linebacker Yawin Smallwood

University of Connecticut middle linebacker Yawin Smallwood had a private workout for the Atlanta Falcons, according to a league source.

Smallwood is graded as a middle-round draft pick.

The 6-foot-2, 246-pounder has 336 tackles over the past three seasons.

Smallword started every game at middle linebacker and had 118 tackles, nine for losses and four sacks last season with an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble returned for a touchdown.

As a junior, he had 120 tackles with two forced fumbles. As a sophhomore, he had 94 tackles, 2.5 for losses and 1.5 sacks with an interception and a forced fumble.

Smallwood had a 5.01 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine, but that was only because he strained his left hamstring. Smallwood is actually faster than that time. He bench pressed 225 pounds 18 times and had a 36.5-inch vertical leap.
