Shurmur tries to quell potential QB controversy

Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur shied away from saying the Colt McCoy is definitively his starter once he returns from a concussion.

On Monday, Shurmur said McCoy was improving from the after-effects of the hit from James Harrison on Dec. 8, but that he would discuss whether McCoy or Seneca Wallace would be the starting quarterback once McCoy is healthy enough to practice and play again.

"If Colt is OK — when Colt is OK — we'll talk about that. How's that? Good answer?" Shurmur told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Wallace played OK in Sunday's overtime loss to Arizona, hitting 18 of 31 passes for 226 yards and a 76-yard TD pass to Greg Little. Wallace also had a crucial fumble in the fourth quarter as the Browns squandered a 10-point second-half lead.

Shurmur isn't ready to declare a starter, and until McCoy is healthy, doesn't have to, which probably gives him at least another week to evaluate Wallace, this time against better competition in the Baltimore Ravens.
