The expectation is Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis will be suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s drug policy, but nothing is official yet and coach Mike Shanahan will not discuss it.

Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter first reported Sunday that the pair will be out for four games after they failed multiple drug tests. They could be done for the season with four regular-season games remaining.

“No. 1, there’s a strict, confidential protocol between the NFL and the players association, and I have not talked or spoke with the NFL thus far,” Shanahan said, according to the Washington Post. “Until I do, there’s not really anything I can say at this point. … I don’t want to go through those scenarios – hypothetical situations – until I know for sure what the NFL and the players association has agreed to.”

Word could be coming soon as Shanahan said he expects to hear from the league “within the next 24 hours.”

Williams and Davis were at Redskins Park today and it was business as usual. Both have been key parts of an offense that has not performed very well this season. At the end of a poor year, it might be best for these players to get any suspension behind them before 2012.
