Report: Jammal Brown still considers himself left tackle

Jammal Brown still identifies himself as a left tackle in the NFL and it’s hard to blame him. After all, he represented the New Orleans Saints at two Pro Bowls playing the position.

But after completing a trade for the veteran on Saturday, the Washington Redskins have different plans for Brown this coming season. It’s fine by him, he says, in a Q&A by Rick Maese of the Washington Post.

That means the Redskins are going to continue with their plan to play Trent Williams, the fourth pick in the draft, at left tackle on the line they are revamping in front of new quarterback Donovan McNabb.

“I'm gonna come in; they want me to play right tackle,” Brown told Maese. “I still think I'm a left tackle, but I'm going to do what they want me to do. I know they got my college teammate Trent (Williams) on the left side. We'll see how that all plays out. But I'm going to play wherever they want me to play. I'm just excited to be here and to be a part of a first-class program.”

It’s been a long process for Brown, who was tendered as a restricted free agent by the Saints in February but didn’t sign the offer until Saturday when the trade and a physical went down. He knew something had to give. He was upset with his contract situation with the Saints and the team had a surplus of proven, quality tackles.

Brown, who played right tackle as a rookie with the Saints in 2006, says he is feeling fine now. Hip surgery and a sports hernia cost him the entire 2009 season, a memorable one for the defending Super Bowl champions.

“I saw Dr. (James) Andrews, he checked me out, looked good,” Brown told Maese. “The Redskins doctors looked at me, looked good. So everything is good.

“Right before I had the surgery, I played the whole year with a torn labrum. That was the last year I played, when I made the Pro Bowl (2008). I had a torn labrum and a sports hernia. The next year came, I was practicing and in the preseason, my whole left side went numb. I went and had the surgery. I recovered from that pretty well. I could've played in the playoffs last year for New Orleans. But we didn't know how long it was gonna take, so they put me on IR."

Now, he’ll have to play for a chance to reach the Super Bowl with a new team.
