Panthers pick up fifth-year option for Star Lotulelei

The Carolina Panthers picked up the fifth-year option for defensive tackle Star Lotulelei. It's a precursor to a likely eventual long-term contract extension for Lotulelei. He's now under contract through the 2017 season. The Panthers also want to do an extension for defensive tackle Kawan Short, who has 11 sacks in consecutive seasons. “Star has not disappointed by any stretch of the imagination, and he’s getting better,” general manager Dave Gettleman said. “He’s earned this. I’m excited we’re going to have him around for two more years.” Follow me on Twitter: @AaronWilson_NFL Aaron Wilson covers the Texans for The Houston Chronicle.
