NFL suspends Josh Gordon for one year
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has been suspended for at least one year without pay for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy.
Gordon failed an alcohol test, triggering the third suspension of his career.
When Gordon was reinstated by the NFL last season, the conditions of his reinstatement included a requirement that he not drink.
"As we have conveyed, we are disappointed to once again be at this point with Josh," Browns general manager Ray Farmer said. "Throughout his career we have tried to assist him in getting support like we would with any member of our organization. Unfortunately our efforts have not resonated with him. It is evident that Josh needs to make some substantial strides to live up to the positive culture we are trying to build this football team upon.
"Our hope is that this suspension affords Josh the opportunity to gain some clarity in determining what he wants to accomplish moving forward and if he wants a career in the National Football League. We will have no further comment on Josh as he will not be permitted in our facility for the duration of his suspension."
Gordon is ineligible to play until the 2016 season. To be allowed to play. he must be approved for reinstatement.
Two seasons ago, Gordon caught 87 passes for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns.
In five games last season, Gordon failed to score a touchdown.
Gordon was arrested last summer and charged with driving while inpaired in North Carolina.
"I failed the test, obviously, and the rest is history colored by media speculation and faux outrage," Gordon said in a letter posted on the website, Medium. "In the end, of course, I failed myself."
