NFL committee recommends Carson site intended for Chargers, Raiders

HOUSTON -- The NFL committee presiding over opportunities for relocation to Los Angeles recommended the $1.7 billion Carson stadium site planned to be shared by the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders. It was a 5-1 vote for the open-air stadium. Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was the lone dissenter. A competing $1.86 billion stadium project in Inglewood orchestrated by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, one of the wealthiest owners in the NFL and the owner of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and the NBA's Denver Nuggets, was the other proposal submitted. It's a strong recommendation by the influential committee, which includes Texans owner Bob McNair. However, it still requires 24 of 32 owners to approve the proposal. The Rams, Chargers and Raiders have all made their project presentations. Disney CEO Robert Iger, the leader of the Carson project, made a presentation advocating for that proposal, citing the strength of its accessibility, fan-friendliness and having two teams in the nation's second-largest cit. "I happen to believe that Carson is the best site and a two-team approach, the Chargers and the Raiders, is the best approach and the Raiders and Chargers should be there," Iger said following his presentation at the Westin Memorial City. "That's it. I think if you're going to bring the NFL back to Los Angeles you should big and bold. Two is better than one. You have home games virtually every week. Secondly, you give the people of Los Angeles some choice in terms of rooting interest. There hasn't been a team there in a long time. I think it makes sense economically as well." aaron.wilson@chron.com twitter.com/AaronWilson_NFL
