ND recruit backs out of commitment, will attend Florida

The Clay Burton era is over at Notre Dame before it even started.

The Venice High defensive end, who committed to the Fighting Irish on Sept. 24, will instead be joining his brother Trey at Florida next season. Trey Burton is the freshman quarterback who scored six touchdowns in the Gators' 48-14 victory over Kentucky earlier this season, including five rushing as a quarterback in the Wildcat formation.

Florida head coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Steve Addazio offered the scholarship Sunday night and it was accepted shortly thereafter. Burton then informed Irish coaches that he had changed his mind.

The 6-3, 230-pounder was slated to play linebacker in South Bend, but he said it is unclear at this time what position the Gators want him to play.

“I'll do anything it takes to get on the field early,” he said. “I'll just go out there with a good attitude, great passion, and a lot of intensity and play to the best of my ability.”
