Joe Staley working his way back from knee scope

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Joe Staley is likely on the shelf until the start of training camp as the veteran had arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this offseason.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that Staley was one of a handful of players on the sideline during today’s OTA practice. Staley was plagued by a knee issue last season and reportedly could have played through it again in 2013 but opted to address the issue. Guard Mike Iupati, a Pro Bowl performer like Staley, had shoulder surgery and he is also not participating in OTA’s at this point.

San Francisco is using the time to evaluate a pair of prospective candidates for swing tackle. The club wants to fill the spot and Barrows reports the team is looking at Kenny Wiggins and Carter Bykowski, among others.
