Jaguars give GM Smith three-year extension

A footnote in the whole Jacksonville Jaguars upheaval today is that general manager Gene Smith received a three-year contract extension.

While long-time coach Jack Del Rio was fired, and Wayne Weaver announced he is selling the team to Shahid Khan, it is Smith, who turned down an extension in the off-season from Weaver, who will be the continuity throughout the transition.

That is good news for struggling rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert's future. Because, even though he will have a new head coach and likely a new offensive coordinator next season, the man who drafted him will remain in Jacksonville. That means Gabbert will be given every opportunity to grow into the job and learn what it takes to be an NFL quarterback.
