Hokies Start Spring Ball

The Hokies have begun Spring Football this week. Let's dive into the major headlines for week 1 of practice.

Coach Frank Beamer returns to the field after undergoing neck surgery before the Military Bowl game in December. He looks good and ready to begin what looks to be an exciting season for the Hokies. The 68 year old ball coach is entering his 28th season as the head coach in Blacksburg.

Offensive coordinator Scott Loeffler will have a returning starting quarterback for the first time at Virginia Tech. Senior quarterback Micheal Brewer, coming off a rather disappointing season, will be working with Loeffler to improve his decision making and accuracy. Brewer could be in a quarterback battle this Spring with junior Brenden Motley for the starting job next fall. This type of competition will be good for both Brewer and Motley, but Hokie fans will be anxious to know who will be behind center against the Buckeyes opening night.

Running backs Trey Edmunds and J.C. Coleman are listed at the top of the tailback depth chart to start the Spring. The injured Marshawn Williams will have to come back fighting for his starting role again if Edmunds and Coleman continue to impress. It will be a very crowded backfield for the Hokies this coming season. Shai McKenzie is still serving his suspension, but should he get off before the fall, the backfield situation will become even more clouded.

Offensive line depth is crucial to the Hokie's success this fall. The starting line as of right now will be Jonathan McLaughin, Wyatt Teller, Eric Gallo, Augie Conte, and Wade Hanson. The depth chart battle for right guard will be the most intriguing with new signing Austin Clark and Parker Osterloh vying for the starting spot.
