Giants promote Chris Canty from PUP list

The New York Giants promoted defensive tackle Chris Canty from the physically unable to perform list today, making him eligible to play Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

Canty was on the PUP list for the first six weeks of the season and since the opening of training camp after undergoing knee surgery during the offseason. To make room for the veteran on the 53-man roster, running back Da’Rel Scott was placed on injured reserve.

Canty performed well in practice this week, according to the team’s Web site, giving the team confidence he will be productive in the NFC East showdown against dangerous rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.

“He’s in outstanding shape, condition-wise,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said, according to the team’s Web site. “He hasn’t been hit, obviously, but we’ll come up with the right formula (for playing time).”

Scott underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday to repair his meniscus.
