Garcia to Jets: Dump Tebow

Former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia tells USA Today that one way the New York Jets can help Mark Sanchez improve is to get rid of Tim Tebow before the off-season program begins on Monday.

Garcia has been working with Sanchez, who suffered through a horrible season in 2012, on the nuances of new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's West Coast system, which the Jets are installing.

"If there's going to be competition at the position, it's not going to come from Tim Tebow," Garcia said in the report. "Having Tebow there (last season) just became more of a distraction, more of a circus show. Obviously, it's their decision. But from an outsider looking in, having Tebow there doesn't bring anything positive. It just brings distraction.

"For Mark, the main competition is going to be with David Garrard and Greg McElroy."

Sanchez had just 13 TD passes and 18 interceptions a year ago, plus lost eight fumbles as well. The Jets are not only using Garcia to teach Sanchez the system, but also to rebuild his confidence.

One thing is for sure: Tebow or not on the Jets' roster, 2013 is likely a make-or-break season for Sanchez in New York. Either he rebounds and gets his career back on track or the Jets will probably be looking in a different direction for a starting quarterback in 2014.
