Class of 2012 QB Pike commits to Auburn

Logos for Tennessee, Auburn, Purdue, Michigan and Arkansas were taped to the front of the table where Zeke Pike would position himself for the biggest announcement of his life.

And when the time came, the Dixie Heights High School (Edgewood, KY) junior chose to commit to the school that captured last season's national championship.

The quarterback announced Wednesday afternoon that he will play for Gene Chizik and Auburn.

The 6-5, 220-pounder, who visited Auburn last week, also had offers from Alabama, Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State, Miami, Penn State and USC, among many others.

Pike is Auburn's fourth commitment for the Class of 2012. The other three commits are offensive lineman Michael Flint, linebacker Cassanova McKinzy and receiver Alex Taylor. The Tigers only had two scholarship quarterbacks on their spring roster, as highly touted freshman Kiehl Frazier won't arrive on campus until August.

One of the nation’s top players in the 2012 class and the NFP's top-rated signal caller, Pike sat on at least 40 scholarship offers. In 2010, the pure drop-back passer threw for 2,144 yards and 17 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. He added 947 yards and 17 more scores on the ground as he's one of the tougher signal callers in the Class of 2012, never one to mind lowering his shoulder after escaping from the pocket.
