FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold has a boot on his right foot and is not practicing, leaving his status for the team’s game Sunday against Buffalo in doubt.

Darnold was injured during the Jets’ 13-6 loss at Miami last Sunday but finished the game. He said Monday that he felt fine other than some bumps and bruises.

Coach Todd Bowles is scheduled to meet with the media after practice later Wednesday.

If Darnold is unable to start, 39-year-old backup Josh McCown would take his place. McCown was the starter last season but hasn’t taken a snap this year.

Darnold has struggled during the Jets’ three-game losing streak, and he leads the NFL with 14 interceptions.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns lost two defensive starters after placing linebacker Christian Kirksey and cornerback E.J. Gaines on injured reserve.

One of the team’s captains, Kirksey hurt his hamstring in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Gaines was also hurt, sustaining his second concussion in three weeks.

The losses will make things even tougher on a Cleveland defense already stretched thin. Pro Bowl linebacker Joe Schobert missed the past three games with a hamstring injury, rookie cornerback Denzel Ward hurt his hip against the Chiefs and cornerback Terrance Mitchell broke his arm earlier this season.

Kirksey made 43 tackles and two interceptions in seven starts.

Gaines, who signed with Cleveland as a free agent in March, moved into the starting lineup after Mitchell went down. He made one interception.

The Browns signed defensive back Juston Burris to the active roster off the New York Jets’ practice squad.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Rookie quarterback Josh Allen has resumed practicing for the first time since spraining his right throwing elbow, though Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott says it’s too early to determine whether he can play against the New York Jets this weekend.

McDermott says Allen began testing his arm Friday, and threw about 100 passes during a workout Monday, which translates into an average workload during a normal practice.

In saying he won’t rule out Allen from playing Sunday, McDermott was cautious in adding “I’m going to take it day to day at this point.”

The coach is also taking into account the option of providing Allen additional time to heal with Buffalo (2-7) entering its bye week after playing at New York.

Allen has been out since being hurt during a 20-13 loss at Houston on Oct. 14, which began the Bills’ four-game skid.

The quarterback position has been in flux since and contributed to a sputtering offense which has scored 20 points in its past three games.

Derek Anderson turned the ball over six times in two starts before sustaining a concussion in a 25-6 loss to New England last week. Nathan Peterman threw three interceptions in a 41-9 loss to Chicago on Sunday.

Anderson remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Fournette back at practice, but Jags unsure if he will play

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette practiced for the first time in more than a month Monday, working with the first-team offense and looking like he might be fully healthy for the first time since the season opener.

But coach Doug Marrone stopped short of proclaiming Fournette back or ready to return Sunday at Indianapolis.

“I don’t know if he is going to play,” Marrone said.

Fournette has missed six games, including all four during the team’s four-game losing streak, because of a strained right hamstring. The Jaguars (3-5) reacted to Fournette’s prolonged absence by signing free agent Jamaal Charles and then trading for Carlos Hyde.

Fournette has 20 carries for 71 yards this season and has missed nine games in two years because of injuries and suspension, creating doubts about the fourth overall selection in the 2017 NFL draft.

Jacksonville built its offensive scheme around Fournette and needs him back to potentially take pressure off inconsistent quarterback Blake Bortles.

Marrone, though, won’t know about Fournette’s availability until later in the week.

“How things happen during the week is really what answers a lot of those questions,” he said. “Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, you are worried about this guy. Is he going to be able to play? Is he going to play the full amount? Did we get the other guys ready enough? What plays does he feel comfortable with? What plays do other people feel comfortable with?

“You go back and forth because, at the end of the day, your job is to try and put the team in the best situation to win. Sometimes I feel like I’ve done a good job of that. But sometimes I haven’t.”

Marrone said Bortles injured his non-throwing shoulder against Philadelphia in London, but took “his normal throws” Monday following the team’s bye week.

“It’s early in the week and we will just see how it goes,” Marrone said.

The Jaguars signed a third quarterback, Landry Jones, as an insurance policy in case Bortles’ injury becomes more significant.

3 Skins starters out for season: Scherff, Lauvao, Richardson

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Redskins lost more than a quarter of their starting offense in one fell swoop Monday, with receiver Paul Richardson and guards Brandon Scherff and Shawn Lauvao all going on injured reserve because they need season-ending surgery.

Coach Jay Gruden said that Richardson has been playing through a shoulder

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Redskins lost more than a quarter of their starting offense in one fell swoop Monday, with receiver Paul Richardson and guards Brandon Scherff and Shawn Lauvao all going on injured reserve because they need season-ending surgery.

Coach Jay Gruden said that Richardson has been playing through a shoulder injury that is now too much to bear, while Pro Bowl right guard Scherff tore a pectoral muscle and left guard Lauvao tore the ACL in his left knee in Washington’s 38-14 loss to the visiting Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

That setback ended a three-game winning streak for the NFC East-leading Redskins (5-3), who brought in several offensive linemen for tryouts Monday and signed tackle Austin Howard and guards Jonathan Cooper and Luke Bowanko.

Before the signings were announced, Gruden said he expected for at least one new player off the street to start next weekend at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-5).

“We just have to make sure we stick with the plan. Keep it fairly simple but not too simple,” said Gruden, whose team has been at its most successful when Adrian Peterson runs the ball effectively but he had only 17 yards on nine carries against Atlanta. “Still going to challenge our guys to do some great things and hopefully the guys that we sign can fit right in and play.”

As it is, Washington already was facing injury issues along its line: Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams missed the game against Atlanta after having surgery on his dislocated right thumb and could be out another two or three weeks.

Plus, Morgan Moses’ status is considered day to day, Gruden said, after the starting right tackle hurt the MCL ligament in his right knee against Atlanta but returned to the game after limping off the field in the first half.

“This is something you don’t want to go through. But it is pro football, and you have to go through it,” Gruden said. “Fortunately we have a very good line coach in Coach (Bill) Callahan.”

Things got so bad against Atlanta that the one healthy starting lineman, center Chase Roullier, ran over to the sideline while Scherff was being tended to on the field to check in with Callahan about who should play where.

“Just to figure out where he wanted guys to go,” Roullier said. “Maybe they want me at guard. Maybe they want me at center.”

It turned out that he stayed at center, but otherwise, the shuffling went like this: Tony Bergstrom, who entered the game at left guard when Lauvao got hurt on the game’s third play, shifted to right guard in place of Scherff; Ty Nsekhe, the backup who started at left tackle in place of Williams, moved to left guard; and rookie third-round draft picks Geron Christian made his NFL debut at left tackle.

Washington essentially was out of linemen at that point, so if another injury had happened, Gruden said defensive end Matt Ioannidis would have been forced to play guard, something he said he’d never done at any level.

“We were about a hangnail away from that happening,” Roullier said. “That would have been interesting.”

Richardson’s first season with the Redskins after leaving the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent ends with 20 catches for 262 yards and two TDs.

“Paul’s been dealing with this thing all year,” Gruden said of the AC joint injury. “Toughed it out for eight weeks and I think the pain has been bothering him so much that he needs to get it fixed.”

Gruden said that starting slot receiver Jamison Crowder, who’s missed four games with an ankle injury, might practice Wednesday.

The Dolphins also disclosed that quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s injury to his throwing shoulder is a capsule injury. He’ll miss his fourth game in a row Sunday against the New York Jets.

Tankersley has a torn anterior cruciate ligament. His loss could be magnified because starting cornerback Xavien Howard (ankle) is questionable for the game. Defensive end Charles Harris (calf) was ruled out, and receiver Kenny Stills (groin), and tight end A.J. Derby (foot) are questionable.

Tankersley had an important role on special teams. He was hurt in practice Thursday with no contact involved.

“He was just running with a guy and took a weird step,” Gase said.

Tankersley was placed on injured reserve, and center Jake Brendel was activated off injured reserve. Gase said the Dolphins won’t try to add a replacement at cornerback until after the Jets game.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has suspended Seattle Seahawks linebacker Mychal Kendricks for eight games for his role in an insider trading scheme.

The suspension announced Tuesday for a player who won a Super Bowl with Philadelphia last season includes time served.

Kendricks pleaded guilty in September to one count of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud. He faces up to 25 years in prison when sentenced in December.

Kendricks was suspended indefinitely by Commissioner Roger Goodell on Oct. 2. He is eligible to rejoin Seattle for Week 12 at the end of November. But he can’t play again until Week 14, when the Seahawks host the Vikings for a Monday night game Dec. 10.

Cleveland had signed the 28-year-old Kendricks in the offseason, then released him in August after he was charged. Seattle signed him in early September and he played in three games, with 12 total tackles and a sack in the last two games for Seattle before his suspension.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Bilal Powell might have played the last snap of his football career.

The New York Jets running back needs surgery to repair a bulging disk in his neck, and coach Todd Bowles says it’s potentially a career-ending injury.

“It’s possible,” Bowles said Wednesday. “We’ll see how the surgery goes.”

Powell was placed on injured reserve after hurting his neck during a 2-yard run late in the second quarter of New York’s 37-17 loss to Minnesota. He remained down for a few moments as trainers checked on him before getting up and walking to the sideline and then to the locker room.

Bowles says the injury is similar to the one that sidelined wide receiver Quincy Enunwa for all of last season, but adds that “this may be worse.”

The playing future for Powell, the franchise’s 10th-leading rusher, was already uncertain before the grim news. He turns 30 on Saturday and is scheduled to be a free agent after this season.

“Bilal’s one of the hardest workers on this team,” Bowles said. “It’s a big blow from that standpoint, but you worry more about the person and healing more than you do the football player. So, that’s where we’re at.”

Powell has 3,446 yards rushing in eight seasons with the Jets, just 1 yard behind Adrian Murrell (3,447, 1993-97) for ninth on the team’s career list.

Powell is the team’s longest-tenured player after being drafted in the fourth round out of Louisville in 2011. He has provided the Jets with a dual-threat presence out of the backfield, catching 204 passes for 1,567 yards and five touchdowns. Powell had 11 receptions for 110 yards and a TD this season.

“Yeah, man, it’s a sad thing to see that just because B.P. is so respected in this locker room,” quarterback Sam Darnold said. “He’s just such a great guy to have on the team. That’s first and foremost, but him as a player, he’s amazing as well. It sucks in general to see that happen to anyone, but especially B.P., it hurts a little bit.”

The Jets could add another running back before their game Sunday at Chicago. Isaiah Crowell and rookie Trenton Cannon are the only players at the position, with De’Angelo Henderson on the practice squad. Elijah McGuire is still on injured reserve, working his way back from a foot injury suffered early in training camp.

The team also has announced it signed safety Ibraheim Campbell, filling a need at another of the Jets’ injury-plagued positions.

Campbell played in four games with Dallas this season after being claimed off waivers from Houston. The Cowboys waived him on Oct. 9.

The Jets had only Jamal Adams and Terrence Brooks as healthy players at the safety position on the active roster. Starter Marcus Maye is sidelined with a broken right thumb and could miss a few more weeks, but was a limited participant at practice Wednesday — a sign of improvement. Doug Middleton, Maye’s replacement, tore a pectoral muscle against the Vikings and was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

Rontez Miles remains on the physically unable to perform list since tearing the meniscus in one of his knees during the offseason. He was on the field during practice, but Bowles said Miles won’t be activated this week.

Campbell was a fourth-round pick of Cleveland in 2015 out of Northwestern and played in 37 games, including 11 starts for the Browns. He was released with an injury settlement in 2017 and signed with Houston.

The 26-year-old Campbell has 82 total tackles and one pass defensed in his NFL career.

NOTES: Enunwa (sprained ankle), CB Trumaine Johnson (quadriceps), LB Darron Lee (illness), CB Morris Claiborne (shoulder/foot), C Spencer Long (knee/finger), WR Robby Anderson (ankle) and LT Kelvin Beachum (back) all did not practice. Johnson has missed the past three games, but says “I’ll be out there soon.” … CB Buster Skrine remains in concussion protocol, but practiced on a limited basis. … LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (foot) was also limited.

Devey started the past two games because of injuries elsewhere on the offensive line, first at right guard and then at center. He hurt his pectoral muscle in Sunday’s victory over Cincinnati.

Smith left the same game with a knee injury.

The Chiefs are already without center Mitch Morse because of a concussion and right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif because of a broken bone in his leg. They signed free agent Jeff Allen to help with depth last week.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Adam Vinatieri’s quest to become the NFL’s career scoring leader could be put on hold because of a groin injury.

He reinjured his kicking leg Sunday when he two missed extra points. It was the first time in Vinatieri’s 23-year career he missed multiple extra points in a game.

Coach Frank Reich acknowledged Monday that Vinatieri had an MRI on his right leg and was uncertain if Vinatieri would play next weekend in Oakland. He also said the Colts will try out kickers this week before making a decision on Vinatieri.

The Colts (2-5) have a bye week after the Oakland game.

Vinatieri scored five points against Buffalo to move within five of surpassing Morten Andersen’s total of 2,544 points.

Browns missing CB Gaines vs. Bucs because of concussion

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Stopping the NFL's top-ranked passing offense got more daunting for the Browns.

Starting cornerback E.J. Gaines will miss Sunday's game at Tampa Bay because of a concussion, further challenging a Cleveland defense also without Pro Bowl linebacker Joe Schobert, who could be out several weeks with a hamstring injury.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Stopping the NFL’s top-ranked passing offense got more daunting for the Browns.

Starting cornerback E.J. Gaines will miss Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay because of a concussion, further challenging a Cleveland defense also without Pro Bowl linebacker Joe Schobert, who could be out several weeks with a hamstring injury.

The loss of Gaines would be tough any time, but especially this week against the high-flying Buccaneers, who are averaging 368.4 yards passing per game and have a trifecta of talented receivers in Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson and Chris Godwin.

With size and speed, Tampa Bay’s receivers stress defenses.

“Stresses the coaches, too, everybody,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said. “They are good. Make no doubt about it. We have one that is averaging 23 yards a reception (Jackson), another guy that is 14 yards per reception (Evans) and another guy that is 13 or 12, whatever he is (Goodwin).

“They all are making plays. They have all scored touchdowns. Then you throw the tight ends in there, too. They have some weapons. Guys that can score the ball. It is a big challenge for us. Have to go play well.”

Gaines only recently moved into the starting lineup after Terrance Mitchell, who started Cleveland’s first four games, was placed on injured reserve after he broke his right wrist at Oakland on Sept. 30.

Gaines practiced on Wednesday, but reported to the team’s facility Thursday with concussion-like symptoms and was placed into league protocol. Jackson doesn’t know exactly when Gaines got hurt, but said it was not during practice this week.

“These things, sometimes they flare up at different times in different ways with players,” Jackson said. “We had one of these a year ago that was a little different. Once they check them and put them into the protocol, in they go.”

With Gaines sidelined, T.J. Carrie will start on one corner opposite rookie Denzel Ward, and Briean Boddy-Calhoun will take over at nickel back.

Carrie signed a four-year, $31 million free agent contract with Cleveland in March after four seasons in Oakland. The 28-year-old Carrie started all 16 games last season and 37 during his tenure with the Raiders. He was credited with 12 tackles when the Browns played the Raiders and has 26 this season in a reserve role.

Carrie said all of Tampa Bay’s receivers are dangerous.

“It is going to be a challenge,” he said. “All of us on the back end are going to have to really bone up because they have some talented receivers with the guys that they have. It is another challenge that we have always prepared for. Week in and week out, there is always going to be a challenge with receivers in this league. So many teams in this league have No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 so for our matchup, it is about going out there and being confident in what we do.”

Cleveland’s got a major injury issue on the offensive side as well with starting center JC Tretter slowed by a high left ankle sprain.

Tretter didn’t practice again Thursday so he could get more treatment on the ankle he injured last week while blocking on a quarterback sneak in the first half of a loss to the Chargers. Tretter will test the ankle Friday, but feels positive he’s going to play.

“We will tape it up and we will see what it feels like, and we will make a good decision,” said Tretter, who is wearing a walking boot. “I still feel confident about playing on Sunday. I played with it during the game for the rest of it, and it feels better than it did at that point. I feel confident.”

NOTES: Browns offensive coordinator Todd Haley said there were plenty of teaching points for rookie QB Baker Mayfield after his shaky performance last week. Haley said it’s vital the No. 1 pick bounces back Sunday. “How we respond to that, how he (Mayfield) responds to a game like that is very, very critical,” Haley said. “It was one game of 16.” … The Browns have scored just six points in the first quarter this season, and Haley’s emphasized stronger starts. “I have told the offense very clearly that we need to do something to get the Browns going early. We can’t wait around and wait for somebody else to do it — for (DE) Myles Garrett to make a big sack/fumble or something like that. We have to do it. That is the charge this week and looking to see our guys respond.”

Bears pass rusher Khalil Mack day to day with ankle injury

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears star pass rusher Khalil Mack is day to day because of an ankle injury, coach Matt Nagy said on Wednesday.

Mack was hurt early in last week's overtime loss at Miami and his 2018 streak of at least one sack and one forced fumble in each

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears star pass rusher Khalil Mack is day to day because of an ankle injury, coach Matt Nagy said on Wednesday.

Mack was hurt early in last week’s overtime loss at Miami and his 2018 streak of at least one sack and one forced fumble in each game ended. Playing without the two-time All-Pro would be a huge blow, particularly with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots visiting on Sunday.

“We’re just going to continue to keep an eye on it and make sure whatever we do, we’re more cautious than anything,” Nagy said. “I believe in that and I think it’s important to go that route.”

Mack has not missed a game since Oakland drafted him with the No. 5 overall pick in 2014. Chicago acquired him from the Raiders just before the start of the season, after he held out the entire offseason and preseason trying to secure a long-term deal rather than play under the final season of his rookie contract. He and the Bears then agreed to a six-year, $141 million extension that guarantees $90 million.

The trade for Mack has energized a franchise with four straight last-place finishes in the NFC North. Despite the loss at Miami, the Bears (3-2) remain in sole possession of the division lead for the first time since late in the 2013 season. But the defense wasn’t the same against the Dolphins with Mack at less than 100 percent.

The pass rush never got to Miami quarterback Brock Osweiler, and the Bears’ league-best run defense was trampled by 35-year-old running back Frank Gore for 101 of Miami’s 161 yards rushing.

Missed tackles on Albert Wilson contributed to two shorter passes going for long touchdowns to cap off a rough game in the heat for the Bears.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Two people with knowledge of the situation say the NFL is looking into how the Miami Dolphins reported quarterback Ryan Tannehill shoulder problem on injury reports last week.

The people confirmed the NFL’s interest in the matter to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the league wasn’t commenting.

It’s common for the league to look into such situations involving a prominent player. The league is expected to contact the Dolphins to understand the details and make sure the injury report policy was followed.

Tannehill sat out Sunday’s overtime win against the Chicago Bears, and replacement Brock Osweiler threw for a career-high 380 yards.

Coach Adam Gase has said the condition in Tannehill’s throwing shoulder worsened as last week progressed. Osweiler took “maybe a few reps” in Thursday’s practice, Gase said, but the injury report said Tannehill participated fully in the workout.

The Dolphins listed Tannehill as questionable Friday, and the decision not to play him was made hours before kickoff.

The Miami Herald first reported the NFL will look into the matter.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons are placing running back Devonta Freeman on injured reserve with a groin injury.

The team made the announcement Tuesday, another major setback in its injury plagued season.

One of the NFL’s highest-paid running backs, Freeman is the fifth Atlanta player to go on injured reserve this season. He follows safeties Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen, linebacker Deion Jones and offensive guard Andy Levitre.

Freeman has slowed by a variety of injuries the last two seasons. This year, he missed three games with a bruised knee sustained in a season-opening loss at Philadelphia. When he returned for a game at Pittsburgh, he went down with a foot injury and also was bothered by groin soreness.

The Falcons didn’t think the groin problem was serious, but further tests showed Freeman needs a surgical procedure. The team is hopeful he will be able to return late in the season.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — A person with direct knowledge of Josh Allen’s injury tells The Associated Press the Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback has been diagnosed with a sprained right elbow on his throwing arm and is not expected to play against Indianapolis on Sunday.

The person says Allen’s playing status is considered week to week as opposed to being indefinite. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because the team has not revealed the nature of the injury.

The first-round draft pick was hurt while being hit on both sides shortly after completing a pass in the third quarter of a 20-13 loss at Houston on Sunday.

The injury leaves Buffalo choosing between turnover-prone Nathan Peterman and newly signed veteran Derek Anderson to start Sunday.

Peterman has thrown four interceptions this season, including two in the final two minutes against Houston. The second-year player lost the starting job after faltering in a 47-3 season-opening loss at Baltimore.

Anderson is a 12-year veteran who was lured out of semiretirement to sign with Buffalo last week to mentor Allen. The 35-year-old Anderson attempted just eight passes in three appearances with Carolina last season, and hasn’t started a game in nearly two years.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns Pro Bowl linebacker Joe Schobert is expected to miss some games with a hamstring injury.

Schobert got hurt in the third quarter of Sunday’s 38-14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Hue Jackson said Schobert will be “down for a little while” and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

Cleveland’s defense can’t afford to lose a player such as Schobert, who tied for the league lead with 144 tackles last season. The Browns gave up 246 yards rushing in Sunday’s blowout loss.

Christian Kirskey could slide over from outside linebacker to take Schobert’s spot.

Also, Browns wide receiver Rod Streater suffered a neck fracture while covering a punt Sunday and is done for the season. Streater got hurt in the first quarter and his injury is the latest blow to Cleveland’s injury-depleted receiving unit.

He was expected to get more playing time while Rashard Higgins (knee) and Derrick Willies (collarbone) recover from their injuries.

The Browns said Streater is “doing well” and team doctors expect him to make a full recovery. Streater does not need surgery at this time.

Willies had an operation on Monday to fix his collarbone after he broke it in practice on Friday. The team remains hopeful Willies will return at some point in 2018.

The injury situation could force the Browns to sign another wide receiver or make a trade. The team signed free agent Breshad Perriman on Saturday, but he did not have enough time to learn the offense and was inactive Sunday.

Spain was hurt in the third quarter with 7:06 left, and he did not return. Spain, who has started 39 of his 41 games with Tennessee, was replaced by Corey Levin. Vrabel says they will know more on Spain later but are hoping to have him Sunday in London against the Chargers (4-2).

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase says Ryan Tannehill might return this week against the Detroit Lions, but there’s uncertainty about the severity of the quarterback’s injury to his throwing shoulder.

Gase described Tannehill’s status as day to day and said he didn’t know whether there was a chance the injury could be a long-term issue. Gase said he’s confident Tannehill will play again this season.

The situation is unusual because Gase said Tannehill’s shoulder got worse as last week progressed. Tannehill was ruled out of Sunday’s game against Chicago hours before kickoff, and replacement Brock Osweiler led the Dolphins to a 31-28 overtime victory.

Gase quashed any potential quarterback controversy by saying Tannehill will return to the lineup when he’s healthy.

Tannehill was limited in Friday’s workout — the first time he has missed practice time because of the injury. He wasn’t on the injury report last week, but was during the week of Sept. 24.

Brock Osweiler or David Fales would start if Tannehill can’t play.

Left tackle Laremy Tunsil has been released from the concussion protocol and is listed as questionable. Tunsil was not limited in practice Friday, and coach Adam Gase said it looks “promising” that he’ll be able to play.

Defensive end Cameron Wake is listed as doubtful with a knee injury.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Panthers coach Ron Rivera is optimistic that three-time Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen will play Sunday against the Redskins after participating in his third straight day of practice.

Olsen is listed as questionable on the injury report, but Rivera says he’s looking ready after missing three games with a broken foot. Rivera says Olsen took more reps than normal Friday and “he ran around really well, so we’re pretty excited about it.”

Barring any setbacks, Olsen will start Sunday.

Rivera also says the Panthers plan to place linebacker Jared Norris on injured reserve Saturday with a toe injury which will create a roster spot for linebacker Thomas Davis, who is returning from a four-game suspension.

Wide receiver Damiere Byrd (ankle) and linebacker Andre Smith (hamstring) have been ruled out for Sunday.

Bears defensive end Akiem Hicks relieved to avoid suspension

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Defensive end Akiem Hicks takes pride in being a leader for the Chicago Bears’ defense.

So an ejection against Tampa Bay on Sept. 30 for making contact with an NFL official during an altercation caused Hicks to reflect, and avoiding suspension left him feeling fortunate.

Hicks was fined $33,425, and will be available to play Sunday for the Bears (3-1) against the Miami Dolphins (3-2).

“This was the first time I’ve been ejected from a game in my entire life, so for me it was very humbling,” Hicks said. “The next time I’m in that situation it will give me a chance to react better.

“It’s also a lesson to the guys on the team that you don’t put your personal situation above the team’s situation.”

Hicks pushed down judge Mike Carr. The official was attempting to break up a dispute between Bucs guard Ali Marpet and Hicks after Bears safety Eddie Jackson intercepted a pass.

Following the ejection, Hicks went to the sideline and threw his jersey and shoulder pads into the stands and went to an empty locker room.

“There’s no feeling like going into the locker room at halftime, or just before halftime, by yourself,” Hicks said. “You sit in the locker room, it’s just not something you’re accustomed to.

“So it was definitely a relief to not be suspended, but also it was a time for reflection for myself.”

Hicks said his message to teammates after the incident was a simple one: “I wanted them to know how I felt about the situation and how wrong my response was to the situation.”

Hicks hadn’t talked about the incident with media since the ejection occurred.

“I know there are a lot of young guys that look up to me on this team, and it’s hypocritical of me to go out there and do things like that and come back to the locker room and think that everything’s gravy,” Hicks said. “It doesn’t work that way.”

Chicago’s defense ranks second in the NFL this season, and is first against the run. Hicks is a major force in the run defense, and last year also led the team in sacks with 8 ½.

“You’re talking about one of the leaders on this defense,” Bears linebacker Khalil Mack said. “Just knowing that he’s going to be out there is going to boost morale for sure.”

Bears coach Matt Nagy was satisfied Hicks had learned a lesson.

“He knew he made a mistake, and that’s not who he is,” Nagy said. “I think his track record shows that.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have ruled out running back Leonard Fournette for their game at Dallas. It will be the fourth game Fournette has missed this season.

Coach Doug Marrone says Fournette (hamstring), left tackle Josh Wells (groin) and cornerback D.J. Hayden (toe) will miss Sunday’s road game.

The Jaguars (3-2) signed veteran Jamaal Charles on Tuesday with the expectation that Fournette would be sidelined for an extended period. They also placed third-stringer Corey Grant (foot) on injured reserve.

No one would be surprised to see Fournette sidelined until after Jacksonville’s bye week, potentially returning Nov. 11 against Indianapolis.

The second-year pro from LSU already has missed six of 21 regular-season games and left his only two starts this season because of hamstring tightness.

He has 71 yards rushing on 20 carries this season.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns wide receiver Rashard Higgins could miss some games with a sprained knee.

Coach Hue Jackson said Monday that an MRI taken on Higgins revealed he sprained his medial collateral ligament while blocking during Sunday’s overtime win against the Baltimore Ravens. Higgins, who is having a breakout season, had three catches for 66 yards and a 19-yard touchdown before getting hurt.

Jackson said surgery has been ruled out. He’ll be evaluated “week to week.” The team did not specify which knee Higgins injured.

Undrafted rookie Derrick Willies replaced him Sunday and made perhaps the game’s biggest play, turning a short catch into a 39-yard gain to help set up the game-winning field goal.

The Browns are also working out veteran free agent Rishard Matthews. He was released last month by Tennessee.

Jackson said he and general manager John Dorsey have not spoken recently about former Dallas star Dez Bryant, who visited the team this summer.
