Biggs: Redskins add offensive consultant for Zorn

The wheels have started to turn at Redskins Park.

Jim Zorn hasn’t been booted out of his office, but the Redskins have made some office space for a “consultant” after wobbly home victories over winless clubs St. Louis and Tampa Bay sandwiched around a stunning loss at Detroit.

Sherman Lewis has been hired as an offensive consultant for coach Jim Zorn. The Redskins have been dreadful when it comes to scoring points in his reign now that lasts 20 regular-season games. The Redskins rank 27th in the league in scoring, averaging just 14 points per game. They’ve yet to hit 20 in a game this season, and have topped 20 just once in the last 12 games.

It was Vinny Cerrato, the No. 2 football decision maker in the building after owner Daniel Snyder, that was first quoted in the club’s press release.

“Sherm Lewis is an outstanding coach who has been an instrumental member of four Super Bowl championship teams,” Cerrato said. “Sherm’s history started with the innovator of the West Coast Offense, Bill Walsh, and over the past two decades he has directed some of the best offenses, and coached and developed some of the league’s premier players. He has a diverse NFL background, having coached running backs, wide receivers, and serving as a coordinator.

“Jim and Sherman share a common bond in that they both worked for Mike Holmgren at different times in their careers. Sherman’s overall experience and expertise will be a tremendous addition to our coaching staff. His track record humbles us all.”

Holmgren. Remember that name. Zorn’s former boss in Seattle could eventually become the next coach for the Redskins.

Said Zorn: “We’re happy to have Sherm’s set of eyes and voice to help us as we continue to find ways to create success on offense,” Zorn said. “I am excited to have him on the staff and welcome his input.”

The Redskins face the winless Carolina Panthers on Sunday. If Zorn doesn’t get a victory there, he could be Snyder’s latest ex-coach by, say, this time next week.

Stay tuned.
