Biggs: Busy day ahead for Bears

The Chicago Bears sent coach Lovie Smith to North Carolina late Thursday, and he will return later today with Julius Peppers and agent Carl Carey in tow. The franchise is expected to sign the defensive end to a blockbuster deal.

It was a fast and furious start to free agent for the Bears, who will also be visited today by tight end Brandon Manmaleuna and running back Chester Taylor. The Bears are the frontrunner to sign both players and give new offensive coordinator Mike Martz some parts to work with. It should be an active day at Halas Hall.

Getting Peppers was viewed by the Bears as the key to free agency. They identified him as the top need. They’re pass rush has struggled greatly in recent seasons and he’ll instantly upgrade that. The Bears are believed to be out of the mix for safety Antrel Rolle, but could still pursue some other options.

First, they will focus on getting the players on their way into visit to put their names on contracts.
