In a move that does not come as a surprise, the San Francisco 49ers have promoted Trent Baalke to the position of vice president of player personnel.

Baalke was bumped up before the draft when general manager Scot McCloughan was abruptly run off, and now Baalke gets a title to go with his promotion. Previously, he was the director of player personnel under McCloughan.

“We are very excited to reward Trent with this promotion,” said Jed York, the owner and team president, in a statement. “During his tenure with the 49ers, Trent has exhibited leadership, organization and superb skills as a talent evaluator. Those attributes have served our team well in recent months. We have a great talent in Trent that we are pleased to have leading our personnel department moving forward.”

York indicated that the 49ers did fulfill the requirements of the Rooney Rule in promoting Baalke.

“I am thankful for the opportunity the 49ers organization has given me,” Baalke said in a statement. “This position comes with a certain level of responsibility to the team as well as its fans, and it is one that I take a lot of pride in. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work with some tremendous people. I plan to draw from those experiences in an effort to help the 49ers return to the championship level of play that this franchise and its fans deserve.”

Interestingly, head coach Mike Singletary will have control over the 53-man roster.
