The NFL's owners voted to ban blocks to the side of a defender's knee, with the rule going into effect for this upcoming season.

Blocks have already been deemed illegal to the backs of defenders' knees. The text for the new rule will now include the change made Tuesday.

NFL public relations representative Brian McCarthy tweeted out a photo including the text from the new rule.

"If an offensive player's block (legal or illegal) is followed by the blocker rolling up on the back or side of the leg(s) of a defender, it is unnecessary roughness, including in close-line play."
