A source close to Dolphins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin said the team ignored early warning signs of problems between Martin and guard Richie Incognito when Martin went AWOL from off-season training.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday that Martin missed two days of mandatory offseason training. The Dolphins declined to comment on the report, citing the NFL’s investigation of the matter.
However, the source said the team did not talk to Martin about why he missed the OTA days.

“They would have found out that he was already feeling threatened by the situation,” the source said. “There was already a problem, but they didn’t ask him what was bother him.”

Instead, according to the Sun-Sentinel, at least one member of the Dolphins coaching staff instructed Incognito to “toughen up” Martin. If that is the case, the Dolphins staff and front office could be facing serious consequences from the NFL.
