STRENGTHS - Gets a good start off the line for the most part, uses his hands well when he uses punch technique. Tends to look for a play at all times, tends to keep his eyes open and has fairly solid awareness. He has the quickness to get to the 2nd level quickly on run plays. Wetzel also possesses solid footwork, he slides very well. Shows the ability to recover on a missed assignment, and also the quickness to slide over if OG misses an assignment. Has the strength to perform against the run.
WEAKNESSES - While he gets off of the line well, Wetzel has the tendency to be out of position off the snap, causing him to get beat. Has a tendency to lean into blocks instead of relying on his punch technique. Needs to become a lot more physical. Speed is inconsistent, at times he looks quick in his blocks, others he looks extremely slow. Needs to use his punch technique a lot more than what he showed. DE will blow by him in the NFL at this point. His footwork can be very inconsistent, sometimes it looks very smooth, other times it looks very choppy.
SUMMARY - Overall I feel Wetzel is very inconsistent. There were times throughout the games where he was fairly solid, and other times where he just looked like he was in slow motion. He needs to improve his consistency in all areas. Wetzel also needs to become more physical at the line of scrimmage. While he is a guy who is always looking to make a block, he needs to show more physicality than what he has shown. At 6'8, 302, I feel he will need to put on weight to have any success at the next level. Needs to become more consistent on getting good position off of the snap. In order for Wetzel to make the next step to the NFL, he needs to become much more consistent and much more physical at the LOS. He lacks good quickness, so in order to react in time he needs to become better at anticipating what the defensive linemen are going to do and block with much better technique so that he can be efficient, which helps overcome a lack of athleticism. Wetzel does move well in the pocket and shows he has okay footwork, but he also has choppy footwork at times and causes him to lose any position he may have on a DE. Overall, I expect him to be a late round pick or priority free agent who is best suited to trying to be a backup/swing tackle. However, to do that he will need to improve his blocking technique and consistency.
